LCO Students Tobacco Planting

Submitted by Wendy Torstenson

A grant was provided to the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe High School by the Wisconsin Native American Tobacco Prevention under the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council to plant, grow, and harvest native tobacco used in traditional ceremonies.  To start the project, Ho-chunk tobacco seed was obtained from the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College farm.  Biology students then prepared seed trays in the classroom to germinate the seeds and placed the trays under grow lights purchased with funds from the grant.  After 6 weeks of growth, seedlings were transplanted into larger individual containers.  On June 3, 2014, the freshman and sophomore biology classes went to the college farm to place the tobacco seedlings in the ground.  After weathering a Wisconsin summer, the plants will be harvested in the fall, cured, and then offered to the schools for use in ceremonies.

LCO Ojibwe High School Students are out there creating their futures !

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe High Students are out there creating their futures again! This time a group of Juniors and Seniors joined in the learning at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Rice Lake.  Our students wanted to experience a day of collegiate life, complete with attending classes, dining in the cafeteria, checking out the library and dormitories, and even visiting homes being built by current WITC students.  With classes like Arc Welding, Machine Design, Web Programming, Cosmetology and Artificial Nails, and Business Management, and strong, knowledgeable instructors it's no wonder WITC is one of the top technical schools in the nation.

Be on the lookout for a sharply designed website advertising an expertly run beauty shop serving the finest manicured nails, with furniture and store layouts created by tribal members of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe--the future is in the making!

Today was one of many steps, and a fun one it was.

Chi Miigwech to the faculty and staff at WITC in Rice Lake, and our dedicated students at LCO High School!

Junior Class Bowls for Turkeys

Submitted by Casey Thompson

What’s better than pizza, soda, and….turkeys!?  Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe High School’s Juniors were on the hunt for three strikes in a row at the bowling alley as part of a class night out Friday.  Many a student and teacher tried, but only a few came close to the elusive, and surprisingly athletic bird.

With turkey off the menu, our awesome students enjoyed one another’s company through three games of 10-frame, topping the night off with one “Crazy Bowling” round, where they could show off their opposite hand technique, one-foot hop throw, and a daring feat of trust whereby they threw their ball through a partner’s legs!
There are always good times to be had at Lac Courte Schools, even after hours!

A big chi miigwech to the class of 2015 and the teachers that supported the event.
